Key Ofsted Findings:

  • Pupils thrive in this nurturing and supportive school. They are proud of attending St Mary’s with its inclusive ethos and they are kept safe here.

  • In the early years, staff provide high levels of support for children to develop their language and communication skills within a purposeful environment. This supports children to flourish and prepares them well for learning to read and write.

  • All pupils’ behaviour is exemplary. They listen attentively, are highly motivated and show respect and kindness towards adults and each other.

  • Central to the school’s ethos is a sense of service to others. From the early years onwards, pupils learn to identify their emotions and how to support others.

  • From early years, all pupils readily take on leadership responsibilities.

  • The school has an ambitious curriculum.

  • The school develops pupils’ knowledge and confidence through a broad curriculum.

  • Pupils achieve well in their learning, especially in English and mathematics. This is because the school has high expectations for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

  • The school’s focus on early reading is at the heart of the curriculum.

  • Teachers are well-trained and have strong subject knowledge. They ensure that activities are adapted appropriately to meet individual pupils’ needs.

  • St. Mary’s is an exemplary Catholic school where pupils engage enthusiastically with their mission statement, ‘With Jesus we learn together through faith and love’.
  • Behaviour of pupils is exemplary.
  • Pupils take pride in their learning, and this is reflected in their religious education books.
  • Pupils are very proud of their school; they feel happy and secure and know who to go to if they need support.
  • This is a community with a strong sense of belonging.
  • Staff show a true commitment to the needs of every pupil.
  • The school environment promotes its Catholic ethos.
  • Leaders and governors ensure that Christ is always at the heart of the school.
  • Pupils engage deeply in prayer and liturgy.
  • The centrality of prayer and liturgy to the life of the school is clearly evident. 
  • A feature and strength of the prayer life of St Mary’s is how well scripture forms the heart of prayer and liturgy. Pupils identify the intrinsic links between scripture passages and how they live their everyday lives.
  • The parish priest is very effectively supported by the pastoral assistant, and both have a strong presence in school, demonstrating strong school and parish links.
